Visa and useful information

If you are a British passport holder and want to travel to Canada, you have to make sure you have all your documents in order and most importantly, that you have the visa which allows you to enter Canada. If you are reading this, it means you are looking for visa information to get to Canada. So, let\'s find out what we need!

Canada and the United Kingdom have a strong and historical relationship, as well as a shared language and similar culture. This might be the reason why Canada attracts more than 650.000 travellers from the United Kingdom each year and why getting a visa to travel to Canada is very easy for British citizens.

Starting this year, citizens can no longer travel freely to Canada without a visa or an authorization. British passport holders are required to apply for a Canada eTA visa to enter Canada on a short-term basis for tourism, business or medical purposes. The eTA was introduced in 2016 to screen travellers arriving from overseas as a response to the global increase in terrorist activities.

Electronic Travel Authorization, short eTA, is an online pre-screening of people from more than 50 countries who can travel to Canada by air without a visa, including United Kingdom, Australia, European countries, Japan and others.

In Canada, the eTA program has been implemented in 2012 and it took four years to develop the required systems that would connect to existing immigration databases and other security data to provide a seamless new screening tool. eTA is an entry requirement for foreign nationals with visa-exempt status who are planning to travel to Canada by air. This type of authorization is linked electronically to your passport and is valid for five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

United Kingdom passport holders, along with other European Union members, are required to acquire the electronic authorization before boarding an aircraft for Canada.

Those who want to enter Canada for over 90 days, or other purposes than those allowed under the eTA program, will need to apply for a different visa. Further details can be found by visiting Canada Immigration Visa Advice.

British passport holders must complete their eTA application 72 hours before their departure date. They must be United Kingdom citizens before applying for a Canada eTa, so travellers holding a passport or travel document with different statuses such as British subject, British overseas citizen or British protected person will be required to apply for a full Canada visitor visa, and not an Electronic Travel Authorization.

Usually, the Electronic Travel Authorization application is processed and approved within five minutes and the authorization is sent by email in the form of a PDF document. There is no need to print or present any documents at the airport, as the eTA is stored electronically, linked to the passport, within the Canada Immigration system.

When you travel to Canada, you should always carry proper travel documentation and identification for both yourself and any children who may be travelling with you. Transport companies such as airlines take the responsibility to ensure that you have all the proper, valid travel documentation you need. If not, then you may be delayed or will not be allowed to board the plane.

If you are interested in how long you can stay in Canada, you should know that the Border Services Officer at the Canadian port of entry (POE) will determine how long you are allowed to stay in the country. Most U.K. citizens can stay in Canada for six months from their date of entry.

If the officer only authorizes a shorter period, the date until you must leave Canada will be indicated in your passport. If you want to stay for longer than the period authorized then you will need to apply for an extension no later than 30 days before you are required to depart.

How to apply for eTA visa for Canada

The application process is really simple and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. You will need your passport, contact information, employment, travel details and a debit or credit card to pay the eTA application fees. If your Electronic Travel Authorization will be approved, it will be valid for up to five years or until your passport expiry date, whichever comes first. Those who are eligible, and want to apply for the Electronic Travel Authorization, are advised to apply a few weeks before their departure to Canada, as processing delays may occur.

If you are a citizen of a country that does not have a visa-exempt status for Canada, you’ll need a transit visa to pass through Canada without stopping or visiting. This is required even if your transit will take less than 48 hours. You won’t have to pay fees for a transit visa, however. Just fill out the application for a visitor visa, named Temporary Resident Visa, and select a transit visa from the list of options on the form.

There are also some aspects that you need to keep in mind. For instance, some people want to travel to Canada and are considered inadmissible. Those activities that would deem a potential applicant as inadmissible include extensive or recent history with involvement in criminal activity, human rights violations and participation in organized crime. Your access to Canada may also be refused for various other reasons, such as security, health or financial reasons.

So, let’s go again through what we’ve discussed. We want to make sure you understood everything that\'s needed.

If you are a United Kingdom passport holder, you must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before travelling to Canada. If you plan to go several times, know that United Kingdom citizens can make multiple trips to Canada during five years with a valid Electronic Travel Authorization, as long as each stay does not exceed six months. If your passport expires before your eTA, you’ll need to get a new one for the new passport.

United Kingdom passport holders who want to travel to Canada must have a valid passport for at least six months from the start of their trip. In addition, they will need a credit or debit card to purchase their eTA via the Canadian government website and they may be asked to provide the additional documents.

United Kingdom citizens can obtain an eTA within the same day they apply for the document, though it can take up to three days to process if you need to provide additional information. When you apply for this authorization, you must make sure that you enter all the correct data, you must double-check them and make sure there is no mistake. If you do so, the risk that your application will be rejected decreases considerably.

You can find the application form for Electronic Visa Authorization on the official Canadian government’s website. Also, you might want to read the downloadable help document first, just to avoid making mistakes on your application. As a United Kingdom passport holder, you can apply for Electronic Travel Authorization online via the Canadian government website without having to send any documents, but be aware that errors will likely cause processing delays.

In the majority of cases, United Kingdom passport holders obtain the required eTA to enter Canada without problems. It only takes a very small and seemingly harmless mistake to get your application rejected, so instead of running the risk of human error and worrying about whether you’ll get your visa on time, you might want to make the process simpler by applying for your eTA at

These are the things to take in consideration. Just make sure you have all the documents in order, make sure everything is all right and you will not end up with any unpleasant surprises. Do this and you can just enjoy your journey from the U.K. to Canada.
